Re-finished vinyl lettering sign

When we got married, nearly 5 years ago, signs with vinyl lettering were all the rage. We got a very cute sign with our last name and "Together Forever" on top of it. It was very cute and really sweet, but it has since become quite outdated. I still remember who gave it to us, but I won't mention their names. If you're reading this, Thank you very much for the sign, we have loved it, and we will continue to love the re-finished version.
Here's a before picture, ugly fishing quilt and all.

The wood was still good and I loved having something sentimental hanging on our wall. So I took the old sign we had and peeled off the vinyl lettering with the help of my little girl (yes, with a cake spatula).

Once I had the vinyl off and sanded some of the sticky parts, I painted it a really pretty blue to match our bedspread.
After the paint dried, I took some distress ink and distressed the edges a bit. (I love this technique. SO easy!)

Then I added my new vinyl lettering. Sorry no pictures.

I chose this saying because my husband's family is Italian, and so "That's Amore" was our wedding song. Ahhh, the memories.

Once I had my lettering on, I spread a thin layer of mod podge on top. You really don't have to do this, and most people probably wouldn't, but my lettering was very thin, and I handled it a lot, so it wasn't really sticking on very well, and I wanted to make sure it stayed put!
Also, you may notice the sign is on my garbage can. Yes, I use the city's garbage can as a table when I need to spray or finish something. That way my sidewalk doesn't get any clear coat on it. Please don't tell Waste Management.

Let it dry, and WHALLA!!!
I know what you're thinking... it's upside down, right?
Yeah, I guess I should have checked which side was up and down when I stuck my vinyl on. I've been begging The Mr. to drill a hole in the back so I can hang it the right way, but so far... it's still upside down.

I also painted my frames, I'm still not sure how I feel about that one... I might re-paint them again.
And I replaced our wedding sign-in picture with this bright and cheery canvas print. I love it!

Here's a view of the sign flipped the right way. The color is a little off and you'll have to excuse my flash, but you get the idea.

Come back in a couple of days to help me say BUH-BYE to that oh-so-comfy and oh-so-ugly fishing quilt!
